A few weeks ago staff members of Mosaic Restoration Company took individual aerobatics flights during a fantastic day out.

To celebrate VE Day we made a donation to the RAFBF (Royal Airforce Benevolent Fund).

Mosaic Restoration Company are currently working on the fine and extensive Venetian glass mosaic internal decoration at ‘The Church of The Sacred Heart and St Catherine of Alexandria, Droitwich’. We were awarded the contract started work in April and looking to complete the project in July 2025.

It is worth noting that the mosaic was executed using the ‘direct’ method, each tesserae set by hand, one by one. The attached images illustrate our project to include; the sympathetic clean, reinstatement of missing and loose tesserae, and some stabilising and reinstatement works.

A really interesting project. We were contacted by The Museum in the Summer and asked about the viability of trying to reconstruct an original marble mosaic removed in haste from the original GWR head quarters in Paddington, London prior to the buildings demolition in the mid 1980’s. Members and trustees of the Museum removed the mosaic in sections with the original screed base still attached where it remained in the Museums stores for almost 40 years. 

During our first meeting at Didcot we took images of the salvaged mosaic, found in numerous pieces ranging in size from individual tesserae to small rather damaged sections. The Museum had also diligently collected other loose marble mosaic from the surrounding area. These spares enabled us to carry out the repairs using the same aged and matching material.

We were awarded the Contract, collected all the bits and over the last few months have carefully and sympathetic reconstructed and restored the mosaic to its original condition, with the aid of numerous images of the original mosaic provided by the Museum prior to removal. We reduced the thickness and mounted the mosaic within a bespoke metal frame with adjustable legs. The work was very time consuming, but extremely enjoyable. The completed mosaic is due to be installed this month with an unveiling ceremony to follow.

New handmade geometric and encaustic tiles installed to refurbished Chapel. Tiles supplied by Craven Dunnill Jackfield and bedded in lime mortar. This is our second phase of works at Shrewsbury, lovely town, worth a visit.

An original marble mosaic found in the main entrance of a grand mansion block under layers of carpet, vinyl tiles and cement levelling compound. Despite the poor condition of the remaining mosaic the residents were keen to retain and restore the original floor to its former glory.

The necessary work was extensive, including where possible, the salvaging of original marble tesserae, cleaning, dressing, consolidation, pre-fabrication of missing sections, numerous extensive in-situ repairs, final cleaning and finishing treatment. The project took 8 weeks from start to finish with a sympathetic and fantastic result to the delight of the residents.

We’ve been working in the workshop the last month or so on three really interesting projects, watch this space for an update later in the year and mid 2025.
