Mosaic Restoration London

Mosaic Restoration Company are one of London’s leading specialists in Mosaic, having carried out some of the most prestigious mosaic conservation and restoration projects in the UK.

Originally based in London, the workshop moved to Daventry, Northamptonshire 15 years ago. The vast majority of the work is carried out in Central London on Private Homes, Public Buildings, Churches and Cathedrals.

Gary Bricknell has over 30 years experience and formed Mosaic Restoration Co. in London in 1998, and is still a partner in Trevor Caley Associates one of the countries leading mosaic artists.

Examples of some of the projects we have worked on:

Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, London 2005 and 2016

Large original un-glazed ceramic mosaic originally supplied by Minton Hollins workshop. The mosaic was created using the in-direct method by fabricating the work in their studio in Staffordshire. The tesserae were stuck paper-faced sheets before cutting into manageable sections and installed on site. The Grade 1 listed building had been subjected to some rather unsympathetic alterations during the 1970’s and we will instructed in 2005 to restore the mosaic to its former glory. Now, 10 years later we are revisiting the project to clean and reseal / polish this high trafficked area.

Marble mosaic projects carried out in Central London 2016

Examples of three projects carried out in Kensington and Westminster. Using our stocks of salvaged and specially procured marble tesserae from Italy and India, we are able to sympathetically conserve or restore these beautiful features to their former glory.

Westminster Cathedral, London 2014-2016

New commission awarded to Trevor Caley Associates and assisted by Mosaic Restoration to fabricate and install in excess of 145m2 of Venetian glass mosaic for St George’s Chapel. Designed by Tom Phillips and overseen by Trevor Caley, the project was completed in September 2016.

Royal Horticultural Society, London 2001 and 2016

Major reconstruction works carried out by Mosaic Restoration Co. in 2001 to include recreating and installing large missing sections and stabilising this beautifully executed original turn of the last Century mosaic. In 2016 we were instructed to revisit the project to assist with the relocation of the main front reception and minor redecoration works. The mosaics were also thoroughly cleaned and received reapplications of stain-stop treatment for easy on-going maintenance.

Grosvenor Estates, Mount Street, London 2011

Three new external marble mosaic entrances are replicated and installed on Mount Street to accurately copy the original 100+ year old entrances. As instructed by the Client, the shops and business premises remained open during our works with minimal distruption. Since 2011 we have carried out three further projects in Mount Street, Mayfair, including Claridges Hotel in 2015.

The Grand Lodge, Freemasons HQ, London 2016

As part of the Clients sympathetic internal refurbishment works we were instructed to procure specially made un-glazed ceramic tesserae to carry out in-situ repairs to this impressive building. The works included stabilising loose sections, reinstatement missing sections, face-grouting where necessary, thorough cleaning by hand and machine, final seal / polish treatment.

Further mosaic restoration phases are expected in forthcoming years.
